Arc Flash Gloves are the first line of defense in personal protection against accidental contact of energized lines or equipment.  Safety gloves are protective garments that are worn over the hands for protection against dangerous or harmful environments.  Electrical workers use safety gloves called electrical gloves. Rubber-insulated products provide protection against voltage and current. Leather gloves are then worn outside the rubber gloves to provide protection against cuts, abrasions and punctures. Electrical gloves are produced through a seamless process and marked with a class and type appropriate for the task.  Leather Cover Gloves as well as Rubber Insulating Gloves are one of the most important form of protection for arc flash.  All gloves are clearly and permanently marked with a label identifying manufacturer, appropriate ANSI / ASTM number, type, class and size.

Some important factors to consider when selecting gloves include:

• Resistance to physical damage such as tearing or abrasion
• The dexterity needed when the gloves are worn
• The extent of coverage required
• Electricity hazards

CLASSES OF ARC FLASH GLOVES

[kleo_list_item]Class 00 – Class 00 Gloves are used in low voltage situations.  They provide protection up to 500V Max, and are usually available in sizes 8-12.  The gloves are in full compliance with all aspects of NFPA70E-00, ASTM F1506-2000 and OSHA 29CFR 1910.269 standards.[/kleo_list_item]
[kleo_list_item]Class 0 – Class 0 Gloves are for use in low voltage environments and provide protection up to 1000V Max.  Most Class 0 gloves are available in sizes 8-12.  The gloves are in full compliance with all aspects of NFPA70E-00, ASTM F1506-2000 and OSHA 29CFR 1910.269 standards.[/kleo_list_item]
[kleo_list_item]Class 1 – Class 1 Gloves provide protection against high voltage (7500V Max).  These gloves are available in sizes 8-12.  The gloves are in full compliance with all aspects of NFPA70E-00, ASTM F1506-2000 and OSHA 29CFR 1910.269 standards.[/kleo_list_item]

Glove fitting:  Proper fit is important to minimize chafing and fatigue. To determine glove size, measure the circumference around the palm. Allow for additional room if fabric glove liners are to be worn, especially with thermal liners.

[kleo_list_item]Glove Protectors:  Glove protectors are extremely important and should be worn over rubber gloves at all times.  These items are not meant to be used alone.  Prior to use, a visual inspection should be conducted, and the protectors should be stored in glove bags when not in use.  Glove protectors provide a needed barrier against punctures, abrasions, cuts and burns.  This fire-resistant accessory is made from goatskin, and has a high level of dexterity.[/kleo_list_item]
[kleo_list_item]Glove Bags:  Glove bags are made of heavy-duty canvas duck, and double-stitched at stress points for durability. Snap hooks allow them to hang on your work belt. They also have a wide top opening for easy insertion.[/kleo_list_item]
[kleo_list_item]Glove Inflators:  Glove inflators are used to test the insulation of arc flash gloves.  OSHA 1910.137 states, ” Insulating equipment shall be inspected before each day’s use and immediately following an incident that can reasonably be suspected of having caused damage.  Insulating gloves shall be given an air test, along with an inspection.” Before using electrical insulating gloves, inspection is crucial.  Glove inflators are a fast and easy way to stay in compliance.[/kleo_list_item]
[kleo_list_item]Cotton Liners:  Cotton or wool liners reduce the discomfort of wearing gloves in all seasons.  Liners provide warm in cold weather and help to absorb perspiration in hot weather.[/kleo_list_item]
